Bands I've Been Missing

It occurs to me that lately I've been listening to good amount of stuff from recently retired bands (either temporarily or permanently).  The following few, which to the best of my knowledge are either done for or on hiatus, really stand out.  At least they made it count while they were around, and thankfully I'm pretty sure all these guys are busy with other projects.

THE RIOT BEFORE

PRISON BOOK CLUB

THE ONLY SONS

Mount Moriah - Miracle Temple - I Can't Put it Down

2013 has already been chockfull of fantastic full lengths and EPs (see Restorations, Dorado, El Cantador, California X, Broadway Calls, Waxahatchee, Water Liars, Gameday Regulars etc. etc.) but I can't say anything has really grabbed me thus far like Mount Moriah's 2nd LP Miracle Temple.

I was certainly eagerly awaiting its February 26 release date after discovering and embracing their 2011 S/T debut far too late, but this thing has been even better than anticipated.  I rarely keep an album on repeatedly, but to say I've had this one in heavy rotation is a major understatement, it's even drawn some unique accompaniment from our 9 month old on multiple occassions.

I'll spare you an attempt at a drawn out description but there are range of well balanced influences going on here.  A country meets college/indie rock esque sound certainly is evidence of the band's roots and residence in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.  I'm continually impressed by bands from the "triangle" and their albums keep landing in my favorites lists (recently Red Collar/J Kutchma, American Aquarium, Wood Ear etc.).

To keep this post from being needlessly lengthy, point is, you should buy this album and their debut, and should do so very soon.

A couple of tracks from the new one, and my favorite off of Mount Moriah below.

Also the band's currently on tour and will be at DC9 on Wednesday March 27.

The New Lows - EP for free

Orlando based The New Lows are offering a free digital download, "The Free EP," that includes alternate versions of tracks off some of their earlier albums The Low Road and Atlantic/Pacific.

I've featured them on a few playlists and hopefully these guys are already on your radar, but if you aren't familiar they're sort of jangly punky indie pop that I'd maybe try to pigeonhole as Cheap Girls meet Ladyhawk. My lackluster description aside, I recommend you give em a shot and head over to their bandcamp site to pick up the EP. While you're there grab the 2012 full length I Couldn't Sleep, which landed on a number of people's year end best lists for good reason.  The balance of their catalog is also available.

Finally on the off chance you happen to be in Orlando tonight, Wednesday March 5, The New Lows are playing with another stellar band, Old Flings, from Asheville, NC (RIYL 90's indie/alt rock, Samiam) at some place called Orlando Nights.

Laura Stevenson & The Cans - Runner EP

Laura Stevenson and The Cans have offered up a free stream of their new 7" Runner, which you'll assuredly want to head here to buy.  All 3 songs will be included on their upcoming full-length Wheel, slated for an April 23rd release on Don Giovanni Records.  Their 2011 album Sit Resist was firmly planted in my top 10 that year, so i'm anxiously awaiting the new one.

Revival Tour Documentary

Came across this brief retrospective documentary, with Chuck Ragan on The Revival Tour, last night. Very interesting watch! I'm regrettably yet to make it to one of these shows.

This year's tour, the sixth one,  kicks off on March 15th and features Ragan, Rocky Votolato, Dave Hause (Loved Ones), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Toh Kay (Streetlight Manifesto),  Jenny O, and Jenny Owen Youngs.  They'll be in DC at Black Cat on March 26th. I'm hopeful I will be too.  For full tour dates and tickets, visit the Revival Tour's website.

Centro-matic 24 Song Free Sampler

You're probably familiar with 'em, but Centro-matic is and has been consistently putting out incredible albums for a decade and a half (not to mention Will Johnson's solo and South San Gabriel releases).

If you don't have their stuff already and are looking to get into the extensive, and wholly worthwhile catalog, here's a good place to start.

Listen below or go to the bandcamp page for the full download.

Special Friday Playlist - 12/14 - 2011 Revisited

All of this year end list making, has me mulling over and revisiting several albums that, in retrospect, were notably absent from my Best of 2011 list and probably deserved inclusion (not that I'd want to bump anything from the original list, which you can find here).  So I thought I'd devote today's playlist to songs from those albums. Hope you enjoy.

2012 Best Songs from the Rest

Since I struggled so much in narrowing down my favorite albums list, and under the dangerous assumption that you aren't completely over year end lists (mine and everyone else's), I've decided to rattle off some of my favorite songs of the year from artists/bands who didn't quite make the "Best of" list.  Some of these are  the hands down greatest of the year.

DPDC Best Albums of 2012

So I'm actually managing to get this list up a little earlier than anticipated, considering I was originally targeting next week. The list was both easy and difficult to compile, in that there were tons of incredible full-length albums released this year, so many in fact it was incredibly hard to pare them down to a Top 30 (which is incidentally the arbitrary number I decided to go with).

The Menzingers album is my definitive favorite with the rest in loose order of preference. As suggested all are must listen/have, and there are probably 30 more albums that in most years would've made the primary list. See the Top 30 and accompanying playlist (which a track from each) below.

DPDC Best of 2012

1. The Menzingers - On the Impossible Past
2. American Aquarium - Burn.Flicker.Die
3. Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory

Favorite EPs/7"s of 2012

While I plan to post my "Best of 2012 Albums" list next week, listening to Joey Kneiser's EP over the past couple of days had me thinking of some of my other preferred shorter run stuff that doesn't qualify for full album status, and I thought I'd wet everyone's appetite for the full list (to the extent you had one) with that.

I've also included a playlist with a track from each.

In no particular order . . . (except I absolutely love the new Two Cow and Restorations 7"s, plus Moonlight for a Graveyard Heart).

Joey Kneiser - Moonlight for The Graveyard Heart

The new EP from Joey Kneiser (of Glossary) "Moonlight for The Graveyard Heart" is out officially today via This is American Music. Pardon the expression, but like everything he touches it's golden. Stream it below and head over to their site to pick it up for $4. While you're there you should also grab his previous release "All Night Bedroom Revival" if it's still available (I believe it's free).  If you're without Glossary's stuff it's waiting for you at their bandcamp page so please don't waste any more time.
