DPDC Friday Playlist - 6/14/13

My Take on 2013 so far . . .

You might've noticed that I failed to post a "Quarterly Report" on the first three months of this year, akin to those I put up last year covering the better album releases, and I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'll compile something at month's end. Maybe I've been in a weird mood or haven't been paying close enough attention, but frankly I think it's because, while there have obviously been a bunch of very good albums released this year, nothing's really grabbed my attention to the extent many early 2012 releases did (that and i'm  pretty busy with life's usual responsibilities, and maybe a bit lazy outside of them).
The two major standout exceptions to me being, Mount Moriah - Miracle Temple and Restorations LP2 (oh and Break Ups - It's Complicated plus Gameday Regulars - Nobody Likes a Quitter on the EP front).

Well I think this week my attitude and perspective on the year is starting to shift.  Yesterday saw the release of three albums that will almost certainly end up in my 'Best of 2013' list, John Moreland's In the Throes Jason Isbell's Southeastern and JKutchma's Sundown U.S.A., and today I learned that the new Arliss Nancy - Wild American Runners is tracked. So in this renewed spirit I just want to run through a list of some of my other favorites of the year, that I've sold short by not mentioning to date.

John Moreland - In The Throes - Preview

Last Chance Records is set to release John Moreland's newest "In The Throes" this upcoming Tuesday, June 11 (same date they'll be releasing JKutchma's "Sundown, USA") and is currently offering a free stream (which you can check out below) and pre-order opportunity on its site here.  Moreland frankly does what he does just about as well anyone these days. Alot of Nebraska era Springsteen sound on this one. Don't miss out on it, and if you're currently without, get his previous releases.

DPDC Friday Playlist 3/8/13

Mount Moriah - Miracle Temple - I Can't Put it Down

2013 has already been chockfull of fantastic full lengths and EPs (see Restorations, Dorado, El Cantador, California X, Broadway Calls, Waxahatchee, Water Liars, Gameday Regulars etc. etc.) but I can't say anything has really grabbed me thus far like Mount Moriah's 2nd LP Miracle Temple. 

I was certainly eagerly awaiting its February 26 release date after discovering and embracing their 2011 S/T debut far too late, but this thing has been even better than anticipated.  I rarely keep an album on repeatedly, but to say I've had this one in heavy rotation is a major understatement, it's even drawn some unique accompaniment from our 9 month old on multiple occassions.

I'll spare you an attempt at a drawn out description but there are range of well balanced influences going on here.  A country meets college/indie rock esque sound certainly is evidence of the band's roots and residence in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.  I'm continually impressed by bands from the "triangle" and their albums keep landing in my favorites lists (recently Red Collar/J Kutchma, American Aquarium, Wood Ear etc.).

To keep this post from being needlessly lengthy, point is, you should buy this album and their debut, and should do so very soon.

The New Lows - EP for free

Orlando based The New Lows are offering a free digital download, "The Free EP," that includes alternate versions of tracks off some of their earlier albums The Low Road and Atlantic/Pacific. 

I've featured them on a few playlists and hopefully these guys are already on your radar, but if you aren't familiar they're sort of jangly punky indie pop that I'd maybe try to pigeonhole as Cheap Girls meet Ladyhawk. My lackluster description aside, I recommend you give em a shot and head over to their bandcamp site to pick up the EP. While you're there grab the 2012 full length I Couldn't Sleep, which landed on a number of people's year end best lists for good reason.  The balance of their catalog is also available.

Finally on the off chance you happen to be in Orlando tonight, Wednesday March 5, The New Lows are playing with another stellar band, Old Flings, from Asheville, NC (RIYL 90's indie/alt rock, Samiam) at some place called Orlando Nights.

Laura Stevenson & The Cans - Runner EP

Laura Stevenson and The Cans have offered up a free stream of their new 7" Runner, which you'll assuredly want to head here to buy.  All 3 songs will be included on their upcoming full-length Wheel, slated for an April 23rd release on Don Giovanni Records.  Their 2011 album Sit Resist was firmly planted in my top 10 that year, so i'm anxiously awaiting the new one.
